Rwanda FDA Suspends 11 Ugandan Alcohol Brands, Orders Immediate Recall

The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (Rwanda FDA) has temporarily suspended the importation of 11 popular Ugandan alcoholic beverages with immediate effect.  

The decision forms part of a broader regulatory sweep targeting 52 alcoholic products imported from six countries—Uganda, India, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, and Poland—under national food and drug safety regulations.  

Affected Ugandan Brands and Manufacturers

The ban hits several well-known spirits, liqueurs, and whiskies widely consumed across the region. According to the directive issued on August 5, 2026, the 11 affected Ugandan products include:  

 Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL): Bond 7 Whisky, Gilbeys’ Flavored Gin, and V&A Imported Cream Liqueur (V&A Imp Cr Lqr).  

 John Distillers (U) Ltd: Campfire Gin, Club 5 Gin, Tembo Liqueur, Jonney’s Gin, and Pan Master Whisky.  

 Glorrie Industries Limited: X5 Gin, X5 Liqueur, and X5 Whisky.  

While the Rwanda FDA did not publicly specify the exact chemical or quality non-compliance details behind the suspension, the regulator stated that the action was executed under statutory laws to protect public health.

The Rwandan regulatory authority issued strict compliance guidelines across the commercial supply chain:

“Importers are directed to begin an immediate recall of all affected products and submit official recall reports within three working days. Distributors and retailers must stop selling these items immediately and return remaining stock to importers.”

Furthermore, the regulator instructed the immediate withdrawal of all promotional and advertising materials related to the blacklisted brands. Consumers across Rwanda have been advised to halt consumption of the listed beverages immediately.  

Rwanda FDA warned that failure to adhere to the directives will trigger legal action under national regulatory statutes and indicated that more brands could be added as market enforcement continues.  

Part of a Sweeping Regional Alcohol Crackdown

The import suspension follows an intensified campaign by Rwandan authorities against illicit and unsafe alcohol. Just days prior to the import ban, Rwanda FDA shut down 101 domestic alcohol manufacturing sites and revoked their licenses over safety concerns.  

The heightened regulatory scrutiny comes shortly after President Paul Kagame delivered a stern national address warning young people against alcohol abuse, urging the youth to resist excessive drinking and protect their economic productivity.
