The General Court Martial sitting in Makindye has sentenced two state informers to death for murder in connection with staged suicide bombing operations in Munyonyo and Kalerwe Market that claimed the lives of two people ahead of the 2025 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
The convicts, Hamza Lyavala and Hamid Walusansa, received the maximum penalty after pleading guilty to participating in the lethal plots, which involved delivering live explosive devices to unsuspecting victims who were subsequently utilized in simulated suicide missions.
Prosecution evidence presented before the military court established that the covert explosive operations were planned and executed in the lead-up to the June 3, 2025, Uganda Martyrs Day events.
Court Rules Incident “Rarest of Rare Cases“
Delivering the ruling on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the General Court Martial Panel, chaired by Brig. Richard Tukacungurwa, categorized the murders as exceptionally grave, stating that the deliberate nature of the crime warranted a severe legal deterrent.
The court noted that after the initial fatal explosion in Munyonyo, both convicts willingly proceeded to execute the second covert bombing at Kalerwe Market.
“The two convicts intentionally delivered the bombs to the two victims. They directly participated in the fake suicide missions and, after the first one, willingly accepted to participate in the second one at Kalerwe Market. The death sentence is therefore justified,” Brig. Tukacungurwa stated during sentencing.
Handing down the final judgment, Tukacungurwa decreed: “This court therefore sentences you, Lyavaala Hamuza and Hamid Walusansa, to suffer death for the two offences of murder.”
The court martial chairman informed both convicts of their statutory right to file an appeal against the conviction and sentence in the Court Martial Appeal Court within the mandated period
