President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called for calm, assuring Ugandans that the government has the capacity to neutralize the Ebola threat before it crosses into the country’s borders.
The head of state made the reassuring remarks on Thursday evening, following public anxiety sparked by the temporary halting of non-essential DRC border travel and a nationwide suspension of mass gatherings.
In a televised address to the nation, President Museveni emphasized that the sweeping restrictions including the recent postponement of the June 3 Martyrs’ Day celebrations are purely preemptive, strategic steps intended to protect the country rather than a sign of internal crisis. He clarified that there is currently no confirmed case of Ebola inside Uganda’s borders.
The President noted that Uganda’s medical and epidemiological teams are among the most experienced in handling hemorrhagic fevers globally.

He assured the public that robust screening mechanisms, rapid response teams, and isolation facilities have already been fully activated along the western and northern frontier districts to block any potential cross-border transmission from the active outbreak zone in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
While urging the public to avoid unnecessary panic, Museveni stressed the importance of absolute compliance with directives from the Ministry of Health.
He advised citizens to maintain high hygiene standards, observe routine handwashing, and cooperate with security and medical personnel stationed at authorized check-points.
The President concluded by emphasizing that by taking decisive, early preventive actions, the government is ensuring that life and economic activity can return to normal as quickly as possible once the cross-border risk subsides.
