Security around the Nakasero residence of Speaker Anita Annet Among has been significantly tightened, with elite intelligence operatives attached to the Special Forces Command (SFC) placing the home under round-the-clock surveillance. The dramatic military presence comes amid escalating tensions over the high-stakes Speakership race for Uganda’s 12th Parliament.
Multiple sources familiar with the development confirm that the operation is being directly coordinated by intelligence officers from the SFC—the elite unit tasked with protecting President Yoweri Museveni and vital state installations.
Insiders reveal that the heightened monitoring is a strategic move intended to neutralize any aggressive mobilization efforts that Among might launch using her vast political and financial network ahead of the crucial vote.
As pressure mounts, sources claim that Among has privately been advised by high-ranking officials to step aside from the race. This proposed soft landing arrangement is reportedly designed to help her avoid a direct, potentially damaging confrontation with powerful state actors who are now openly throwing their weight behind Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth.
This rapidly unfolding situation follows the dramatic Friday night arrest of newly sworn-in Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere Nsubuga. Nameere was picked up by plain-clothed operatives in Masaka following a bitter online confrontation between Among’s loyalists and supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), which directly involved PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda.
The contest for the Speakership has now evolved into one of the most politically charged internal battles within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), exposing deep fractures between Among’s camp and factions aligned with Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Gen. Muhoozi recently distanced himself from earlier endorsements of the incumbent leadership, stating that the PLU would strictly support whoever the President endorses.
He followed this with a barrage of public posts targeting corruption and luxury spending, remarks widely seen as a direct swipe at Among following public outrage over her newly imported Shs3.4 billion Rolls-Royce.
Despite the heavy security presence and political isolation, Among’s supporters remain defiant. They maintain that she remains the officially recommended candidate of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) and argue that she still commands a significant majority among the ruling party’s Members of Parliament. As of Saturday, neither the UPDF, the SFC, nor the Speaker’s office had issued an official comment on the active surveillance.
