Newly sworn-in Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament Justine Nameere Nsubuga has resurfaced in public following her dramatic arrest on Friday night, using her first press briefing to officially denounce incumbent Speaker Anita Among’s re-election bid and endorse Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament.
Speaking at a packed press conference in the Kizungu suburb of Masaka City on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Nameere detailed the chaotic circumstances of her interception by armed operatives on Friday evening.
The MP revealed that she was released in the early hours of Saturday morning, noting that her captors subsequently apologized for the ordeal and provided her a ride back to her residence in Kigo, Wakiso District.
The arrest had violently disrupted her homecoming victory convoy, sparking panic among her constituents and drawing sharp condemnation from her family.
In her opening remarks at the press briefing, Nameere wasted no time entering the high-stakes political fray surrounding the leadership of the 12th Parliament.

She declared her total support for the candidacy of West Budama County South MP Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth, who is vying to replace Among. Her declaration aligns perfectly with the recent directives from Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), who have openly defected from supporting Among following public anger over luxury spending and institutional corruption allegations.
The abrupt pivot by the Masaka legislator is highly significant, given that her initial arrest followed a fierce social media altercation with PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda over the league’s decision to withdraw its endorsement of Among.
By publicly endorsing Oboth-Oboth just hours after her release, Nameere’s turnaround signals the immense pressure being exerted on NRM lawmakers to align with the new security-backed political order ahead of the May 25 speakership vote.
As more MPs-elect publicly fall into line behind Oboth-Oboth, the political isolation of Anita Among deepens. Nameere’s dramatic weekend from an armed drone interception to an explicit denunciation of the current parliamentary leadership serves as the latest proof that the battle for the control of the House has entered its definitive, high-pressure phase.
