The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has officially welcomed Jamaican dancehall sensation Spice to the heart of the kingdom, describing her visit as a powerful bridge between African heritage and the global stage.
Spice, born Grace Latoya Hamilton, paid a courtesy call to the Buganda Kingdom headquarters at Bulange Mengo ahead of her highly anticipated Let’s Get Spiced Up concert.
The meeting, attended by ministers serving under Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, turned into a poignant discussion on shared history, tourism, and the enduring bond between the Caribbean and the continent.
During the exchange, Katikkiro Mayiga reflected on the deep-rooted connections that link Ugandans to the people of Jamaica. He noted that the shared ancestry between the two nations is visible not just in culture and appearance, but in a common spirit that has survived centuries.
Mayiga remarked that although history saw many taken from Africa to the Caribbean, the roots remain firm. He emphasized that when a global figure like Spice visits, it serves as a homecoming that tells the rest of the world that Uganda is a place of rich history and welcoming people.
The visit is a strategic move by the Uganda Tourism Board in partnership with the Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board. By merging the high-energy world of international entertainment with traditional cultural heritage, organizers hope to draw fresh global eyes to the Pearl of Africa.

Spice has already spent time exploring the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a site of immense historical significance for the Buganda people. These visits are intended to position Uganda as more than just a wildlife destination, highlighting it as a hub for cultural exchange and deep-seated historical narratives.

Katikkiro Mayiga also spoke to the economic ripple effect of such visits, urging Ugandans to see tourism as a vital engine for job creation and national pride. He encouraged locals to embrace the spirit of leisure and participate in the country’s growing cultural tourism scene.
According to kingdom officials, the presence of international celebrities acts as a megaphone for Uganda’s story, amplifying the nation’s reach far beyond its borders and inviting investment in the hospitality and arts sectors.
The buzz in Kampala is now centered on the Lugogo Cricket Oval, where Spice is set to perform this Saturday, May 9. Organizers are preparing for a massive turnout, viewing the event as the climax of a week-long effort to blend music with tourism promotion.
For the Buganda Kingdom and the national tourism office, this visit is about more than just a single night of music; it is about building a lasting narrative of connection that resonates with global audiences and strengthens Uganda’s standing as a premier cultural destination.
