Makerere University’s historic Impis Rugby Grounds transformed into a sea of music, raincoats, and high-voltage campus drama on Saturday night as thousands of students gathered for the annual Freshers’ Ball.
Organized under the auspices of the 92nd Students’ Guild, the free-entry concert was designed as the official welcome bash for newly admitted university freshmen.
Despite intermittent showers throughout the evening, continuing students and freshers braved the downpours, cheering and dancing to a high-energy lineup featuring popular Ugandan performers, including Winnie Wa Mummy, Nina Roz, Feffe Bussi, and Hanz MC.
However, the climax of the night was defined by an unprecedented power struggle on stage between headlining urban artist Fik Fameica and Makerere University Guild President Gracious Kadondi.
On-Stage Confrontation and Security Intervention
Shortly after Fik Fameica stepped onto the main stage to deliver his set, Guild President Gracious Kadondi walked onto the platform surrounded by members of her executive cabinet. Kadondi took hold of the microphone, attempting to pause the musical set to deliver an official address to the assembled student body.
The sudden intrusion met immediate resistance from the artist, who refused to cede control of his performance time.
“Leave my stage! I have work to do,” Fik Fameica told the Guild President directly over the sound system.
The student crowd erupted into loud chants in support of the musician. Sensing potential crowd volatility, campus security personnel and event stewards quickly stepped in, escorting Kadondi and her executive delegation off the stage.
Fik Fameica resumed his performance immediately afterward to thunderous cheers from the audience, with video clips capturing the exchange going viral across social media platforms within hours of the incident.
