A school trip turned into a morning of horror today, May 7, 2026, when a bus belonging to Gulu Secondary School was involved in a fatal head-on collision in Kigumba.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 5:44 AM, has left the school community and parents in shock as news of the crash reached the public earlier this morning.
The bus was reportedly transporting a group of students from Gulu to Jinja for a scheduled educational tour. Preliminary reports from the scene indicate that the crash was triggered by a high-risk driving maneuver.
Witnesses and survivors suggest that the bus driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, inadvertently placing the bus directly in the path of an oncoming Fuso truck traveling from the opposite direction. The resulting impact was devastating.
Traffic authorities have confirmed that the bus conductor died instantly upon impact. The collision also left 17 students with various degrees of injury.
Among the casualties, two students are reported to be in critical condition, battling for their lives, while 15 others sustained relatively minor injuries ranging from cuts to soft tissue trauma.

Parents and guardians have started arriving at the facility as they seek information on the status of their children.
Police have cordoned off the area in Kigumba to facilitate the removal of the wreckage and allow for a detailed technical investigation. While the focus remains on the medical recovery of the survivors, the incident has once again sparked a national conversation regarding the safety of nighttime and early morning school travel.
Authorities are expected to provide a more comprehensive update as the investigation into the driver’s actions continues throughout the day.
