Mother Nature dramatically intervened in the high-profile murder trial of Christopher Okello Onyum on Wednesday, as a powerful thunderstorm tore through the makeshift Ggaba Mobile Court, sending tents flying and triggering mass panic.
The afternoon session, which had just resumed to hear the testimony of the final prosecution witness, was abruptly cut short when a light drizzle rapidly escalated into a violent, destructive storm.
Eyewitnesses report that the situation turned chaotic within minutes. Strong winds violently ripped apart the main judicial tent where presiding Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha was seated. As the structure began to give way, court attendees were forced into an emergency evacuation.
Security personnel and the judge’s elite bodyguards acted swiftly, rushing to her aid. She was quickly escorted out of the collapsing tent and whisked away in her official vehicle, which her driver had tactically maneuvered to the scene amidst the chaos.
The adjacent tent, designated for members of the public and the press, also shook violently under the force of the winds, prompting a frantic scramble as occupants fled for safety.

The sudden disruption forced a premature adjournment of the session. In a surreal scene adjacent to the court grounds, members of a neighboring church reportedly broke into intense, loud prayers as the storm raged, seeking spiritual intervention to avert further calamity.
Wednesday’s weather-induced chaos is the second major incident to disrupt the proceedings of this highly sensitive trial in recent days. Just last week, the court precinct was the scene of a horrific accident when a Uganda Prisons van transporting the suspect allegedly experienced a brake failure and rammed into a group of journalists, leaving online reporter Ronald Mulwana with serious injuries.
The trial, which has gripped the nation following the gruesome killing of four toddlers at a Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre on April 2, is expected to resume on Thursday, weather permitting and pending the reconstruction of the court facilities.
