The nation is mourning the loss of Monica Azuba Ntege, the former Minister of Works and Transport, who passed away at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.
Serving in President Yoweri Museveni’s cabinet from 2016 to 2019, Azuba Ntege played a pivotal role in steering Uganda’s national infrastructure agenda during a critical period of expansion and transition.
Appointed to the cabinet in 2016, Azuba Ntege took over the Works and Transport portfolio from John Byabagambi. During her three-year tenure, she was at the center of highly ambitious government projects. She oversaw major national road expansions and laid the critical groundwork for the much-anticipated revival of the national carrier, Uganda Airlines.
In 2019, she exited the cabinet, handing over the leadership of the ministry to the current Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala.
Beyond her administrative duties, Azuba Ntege is remembered for her firm stance on public accountability. She made national headlines in 2018 when she boldly announced an investigation into senior ministry officials.
The probe centered on allegations that bureaucrats had illegally shared part of a $2 million (about Shs 7 billion) performance bond paid to the government by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) Uganda Limited, the firm contracted for mandatory motor vehicle inspections.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has officially eulogized their former leader. In a statement, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bageya Waiswa, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hon. Monica Ntege Azuba, who served as Minister of Works and Transport with dedication and distinction between 2016-2019,” Waiswa stated. “Her contribution to Uganda’s infrastructure development and public service will be remembered with great respect. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who worked with her.”
Azuba Ntege’s passing marks a compounded tragedy for her family. Her death comes just over a year after the loss of her husband, Mark Kawesa Ntege, who passed away on January 12, 2025. The couple, who had been married since February 1998, is survived by eight children.
As of press time, neither the government nor the family has released a formal statement regarding the specific cause of death or the official funeral arrangements.
