In a rare display of bipartisan solidarity, the Parliament of Uganda has unanimously adopted a motion to deduct UGX 500,000 from the emoluments of every Member of Parliament to support the education of the late Hon. Helen Nakimuli’s daughter.
The resolution was passed today April 22, 2026, during a somber special plenary session convened to pay tribute to the fallen Kalangala District Woman Representative, whose body lay in state in the parliamentary chambers.
The motion was formally moved by the State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang. He appealed to the House to stand in the gap left by the 41-year-old legislator, who died tragically following an unsuccessful surgical procedure earlier this week.
Minister Ogwang proposed that the Parliamentary Commission be authorized to make a direct, one-off deduction of UGX 500,000 from each MP’s pay. The proposal resonated deeply across the political divide, drawing immediate support from both the ruling NRM and the opposition benches.
The presiding Speaker subjected the motion to a vote, and it was unanimously adopted by the entire House without a single objection.

With Uganda’s Parliament comprising over 500 members, the collective deduction is projected to raise upwards of UGX 250 million. This substantial financial pool will be placed into an education fund specifically designated to ensure that the late MP’s daughter can continue her studies unhindered by the sudden loss of her mother.
Several legislators taking to the floor to second the motion noted that while Parliament routinely honors its departed colleagues with words of praise, backing those words with concrete financial support for the deceased’s immediate family is the truest mark of camaraderie.

The financial pledge served as the climax to a highly emotional day at Parliament. Colleagues from the National Unity Platform (NUP), alongside government ministers, took turns eulogizing Nakimuli as a fearless, grassroots-oriented leader who championed the rights of marginalized island communities and fought tirelessly for better healthcare and infrastructure in Kalangala.
Following the parliamentary tribute, the late MP’s cortege proceeded to the NUP Headquarters for formal party honors, ahead of an evening vigil at her family residence in Namungoona.
Hon. Helen Nakimuli will be laid to rest tomorrow, Thursday, April 23, in Luwero District, following a Requiem Mass at the Namungoona Orthodox Church.
