Emergency rescue teams and traffic police are managing a horrific scene in Kapchorwa District following a fatal Thursday night road crash involving a school bus packed with primary school pupils. The ill-fated vehicle belongs to Kings David Junior School, located in Ndejje.
The catastrophic incident occurred at approximately 8:00 PM on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Chekwatit Village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county in Kapchorwa District.
According to an immediate statement released by Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the bus—an Isuzu model bearing registration number UA 108BQ—was navigating the steep terrain when the disaster struck.
The Uganda Police Force confirmed that regional emergency responders, traffic enforcement units, and local healthcare workers were deployed to the scene in Chekwatit Village to coordinate extrication and rescue efforts.
The rugged, mountainous geography of Kapchorwa, combined with pitch-black night conditions, severely complicated initial rescue efforts. Local residents rushed out with flashlights and hand tools to assist police in pulling trapped children out of the mangled wreckage of the school bus.
While initial police communications confirmed multiple fatalities and dozens of severe injuries at the scene, official processing of the victims’ identities and exact casualty figures was deferred as responders prioritized rushing survivors to nearby health facilities for emergency stabilization.

This devastating incident marks the third major school transport disaster to hit Uganda in a span of just seven days, sparking intense national outrage and a deep re-evaluation of school excursion safety standards.
The three back-to-back highway disasters include:
Friday, July 10, 2026 (Mukono District): A passenger train rammed into a Friendship Company school bus carrying over 70 students from Mwebaza High School at the Namumira railway crossing in Kyetume. The high-impact collision overturned the bus, killing one teacher and leaving dozens of students critically injured.
Tuesday, July 14, 2026 (Bugweri District): At around 4:45 AM, an Amuria High School bus transporting 73 geography students from St. Paul Secondary School, Katakwi, rammed into the rear of a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer at Nawangisa Village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway. The 68-year-old veteran bus driver died instantly, and 15 others were rushed to Iganga General Hospital with severe trauma.
Thursday, July 16, 2026 (Kapchorwa District): The latest night-time crash involving the pupils of Kings David Junior School, Ndejje, which ultimately served as the breaking point for state regulatory bodies.
The rapid succession of these three major crashes has triggered an immediate inter-ministerial response. The Ministry of Education and Sports, alongside the Ministry of Works and Transport, have already launched investigations into the mechanical status of the vehicles, driver fatigue, and structural safety violations regarding night-time transport rules for minors.
