A wave of relief has swept across Uganda’s healthcare sector after medical authorities successfully discharged the last patient being treated for the Ebola virus. The milestone leaves the country with zero active confirmed cases of the deadly hemorrhagic fever, marking a significant victory in the fight against the latest cross-border outbreak.
At a formal discharge ceremony, Minister of Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi officially confirmed the development, describing the milestone as a profound moment of joy for the nation and its frontline healthcare workers. He emphasized that the successful containment demonstrates that with early detection, prompt treatment, and a robust health system, the deadly Ebola virus can be decisively defeated.
With no active cases remaining in treatment facilities, Uganda has officially initiated the World Health Organization’s mandatory 42-day countdown. If no new infections are recorded within this incubation monitoring period, the country will officially be declared Ebola-free.
The current outbreak, which involves the Bundibugyo species of the virus, was first confirmed on Ugandan soil in May. The index case was identified as a male patient who had crossed the border from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—the current epicenter of the outbreak—seeking specialized medical treatment in Uganda.
Since May, Uganda has recorded a total of 20 confirmed cases, the vast majority of whom were visitors or transit passengers fleeing the outbreak in the DRC. Tragically, the virus claimed two lives in Uganda before containment measures were fully localized.

Having battled several Ebola outbreaks over the past two decades, Uganda deployed its highly established viral hemorrhagic fever protocols. Security and health agencies rapidly implemented strict isolation procedures for suspected cases, aggressive contact tracing, and targeted public health messaging in border districts to neutralize the spread.
Despite the successful discharge of the final patient, the Ministry of Health has urged citizens to remain on high alert. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Ministry advised the public to remain vigilant and seek immediate medical care if they develop symptoms such as high fever, vomiting, severe diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding.
While Uganda celebrates its containment success, the situation in the neighboring DRC remains catastrophic. According to official government data, the DRC has recorded over 2,000 confirmed infections and 796 deaths in the latest wave.
Global health experts are raising alarms that the situation may be far worse than reported. Earlier this week, a World Health Organization (WHO) official indicated that the true number of infections could be up to four times larger than the officially recorded figures, suggesting the virus may have been circulating completely undetected in local communities for months before the outbreak was officially declared.
The Ebola virus, which is primarily transmitted to humans from infected animals like fruit bats, attacks the body’s immune system and major organs. Human-to-human transmission occurs rapidly through direct contact with the bodily fluids, such as blood or sweat, of an infected person.
