The wait is finally over for Ugandan tech enthusiasts and businesses as Starlink, the satellite internet constellation operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has officially gone live in Uganda.
Following regulatory clearance from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Starlink is now accepting local orders, unveiling competitive pricing that has immediately sent ripples through the local telecommunications sector, currently dominated by MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda.
The launch introduces high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the entire country, including remote and rural areas that have long struggled with poor network coverage from traditional fiber and cellular providers.
Starlink Uganda Pricing Breakdown
According to the official Starlink website, Ugandan customers can now order the standard hardware kit and subscribe to the service using local currency.
Hardware Kit: The standard Starlink dish and Wi-Fi router will cost UGX 1,350,000.
Monthly Subscription: The standard residential plan for uncapped, high-speed internet is priced at UGX 140,000 per month.
Shipping & Handling: A one-time shipping fee applies for the delivery of the hardware kit directly to the user’s registered address.
Users can expect download speeds ranging between 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps, making it a highly attractive option for heavy internet users, remote workers, and businesses.
A Direct Threat to MTN and Airtel?
The entry of Starlink marks a significant shift in Uganda’s internet landscape. For years, MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda have operated as a near-duopoly, controlling both the mobile data and home fiber markets.

While the initial upfront cost of the Starlink hardware (UGX 1.35 million) remains a barrier for the average Ugandan household, the monthly subscription of UGX 140,000 for truly unlimited, high-speed internet is highly competitive when compared to existing home fiber and 5G router packages offered by local telecoms.
Industry analysts predict that Starlink will initially dominate the enterprise sector, upscale residential neighborhoods, and upcountry areas like lodges, farms, and district local governments where MTN and Airtel’s fiber footprint has yet to reach.
To defend their market share, local telecom operators are expected to aggressively revise their home internet pricing, increase data caps, and accelerate their 5G rollouts in the coming months.
