The Bank of Uganda (BoU) is grappling with a significant security breach after unknown assailants infiltrated its heavily fortified headquarters at Plot 45, Kampala Road, escaping with critical hardware. The incident, detected on Monday morning, May 4, 2026, has triggered a massive joint security investigation and a citywide crackdown in the capital’s central business district.
In an official public notice, the central bank confirmed that seven high-end laptops were stolen during the overnight raid. While the bank’s leadership was quick to assure the public that core banking operations and services remain fully functional and undisrupted, the nature of the entry has raised serious questions regarding institutional resilience.
Preliminary reports suggest the breach was alarmingly tactical, with intruders reportedly accessing the building through basement offices—possibly using duplicated keys—rather than resorting to forced entry.
The severity of the intrusion extended beyond the theft of laptops. The assailants reportedly targeted the bank’s internal surveillance infrastructure, disabling a CCTV server and stealing networking equipment, including a high-value router estimated to be worth $13,500.
By vandalizing the surveillance system, the perpetrators effectively obscured their tracks, suggesting a coordinated and well-informed operation that some security experts fear may point to internal vulnerabilities.
Security forces responded with an immediate and forceful show of strength. Police and military units cordoned off several major downtown buildings, including Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza, Kalungi Plaza, and City House, as part of a recovery operation.
This rapid response has already led to more than 20 arrests in downtown arcades, as investigators attempt to trace the stolen hardware and identify those behind the breach.

This incident arrives at a sensitive time for the institution, which has faced previous scrutiny over internal theft and cyber-enabled financial breaches.
While the physical loss of laptops is notable, the greater concern for the financial sector remains the potential exposure of sensitive data and the symbolic blow to the perceived invincibility of the nation’s financial anchor.
As the joint investigation continues, the Bank of Uganda is expected to conduct a comprehensive audit of its physical and digital access controls to restore full confidence in its security architecture.
