Police have arrested 20 suspected National Unity Platform (NUP) activists following a violent attack on Kibuku County Member of Parliament Herbert Kinobere and other National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters during the burial of former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at Kungu-Lutale along Nakawuka Road in Wakiso District, where hundreds of mourners gathered for the send-off of the former opposition lawmaker.
Addressing reporters in Kampala, Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that a group of political activists allegedly attacked mourners they identified as NRM members, objecting to their presence at an opposition leader’s burial.

According to police reports, the rowdy group confronted MP Kinobere, deflated his vehicle’s tyres, and pelted stones at several other attendees whose political alignment they opposed. Kinobere was forced to escape the scene to avoid physical harm.
“A group of NUP political activists allegedly opposed the presence of NRM supporters. They attacked mourners and one of them was MP Kinobere, they deflated his car tyres and pelted stones on a number of mourners who they did not approve of,” Rusoke said.
Police personnel deployed at the venue intervened to protect fleeing mourners and rounded up 20 suspects linked to the violence.
“Police intervened and tried to secure those who had run away,” Rusoke stated. “We made 20 arrests. They are in police custody and they will be arraigned in court and dealt with in accordance with the law.”
Police Condemn Political Intolerance
Condemning the violence, ACP Rusoke appealed to the public to maintain political tolerance and allow all mourners to pay their respects peacefully regardless of party affiliation.
“We urge the public to respect mourners regardless of political affiliation and refrain from violence, intimidation and destruction of property,” Rusoke urged, highlighting that politicians and public figures maintain personal, professional, and family bonds across party lines.
“A deceased person can have friends, OBs or workmates. If you are looking at a deceased MP you may align with them on political lines but there are others that could be their relatives and friends,” he added.
Legacy of Late MP Charles Matovu
Former Busiro South MP Charles Matovu, 41, died on Thursday night, October 22, 2026, at Mulago National Referral Hospital following a sudden illness.
Matovu represented Busiro South on the NUP ticket in the 11th Parliament between 2021 and 2026. Following the January 2026 parliamentary elections, Matovu lost his seat to NRM’s Kenan Opio.
He subsequently filed an election petition in the High Court sitting at Entebbe alleging electoral irregularities. High Court judges had commenced formal hearings on the petition earlier in October before his sudden passing.
The 20 suspects remain in police custody at Entebbe Division Police as investigations continue ahead of their arraignment in court.
