Authorities in Adjumani District have destroyed 300 bags of impounded charcoal in a high-profile public enforcement exercise designed to combat widespread environmental degradation and illegal commercial logging in the region.
The destruction took place on Sunday afternoon, October 25, 2026, at Ayiri Central Village in Ayiri Parish, Ukusijoni Sub-county, following directives issued by Adjumani Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Swaib Toko.
RDC Toko confirmed that the confiscated consignment was deliberately set ablaze to send a unequivocal warning to commercial traders operating within the district.
“All the impounded bags have been destroyed, signalling the authorities’ determination to discourage the practice in the district,” Toko stated.

The operation comes amid intensified security and administrative operations targeting illegal logging networks across Northern Uganda, a region severely impacted by unregulated tree felling for regional charcoal trade.
District security committees and environmental stakeholders are shifting toward a multi-pronged approach that combines strict field enforcement, community sensitization, agroforestry promotion, and targeted tree-planting campaigns to restore lost forest cover and encourage sustainable natural resource management.
