Police in Namutumba District have launched a murder investigation into the death of a two-year-old boy who died while being rushed to Iganga General Hospital following suspected poisoning.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday, October 19, 2026, at approximately 10:00 AM in Bunyekero Village, Busini Parish, Nabweyo Sub-county.
Following preliminary inquiries, police arrested the child’s 28-year-old biological mother, Apofia Naigaga, who is accused of administering rat poison to her son. The toddler was initially rushed to Nsinze Health Centre IV before being referred to Iganga General Hospital, but succumbed to the toxic exposure en route to the referral facility.

Busoga East regional police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed that a specialized team led by the Officer in Charge of Kibale Police Station, along with detectives and Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCO), visited and documented the scene.
“The scene was visited and documented by a team led by the officer in charge of Kibale Police Station, together with detectives and Scenes of Crime Officers,” Kasadha said.

Statements have been recorded from key witnesses, and the child’s body was transferred to the Iganga General Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. Forensic detectives also secured toxicological samples for laboratory analysis to conclusively establish the chemical cause of death.
The suspect, Apofia Naigaga, remains in custody at Namutumba Central Police Station as homicide detectives continue compiling the case file.
Domestic Misunderstandings Suspected as Trigger
Preliminary police inquiries indicate that the alleged poisoning may have stemmed from unresolved domestic misunderstandings between Naigaga and the deceased child’s father.
Strongly condemning the incident, Kasadha cautioned parents against venting domestic frustrations on innocent children, urging couples to utilize established resolution mechanisms.
“We urge couples to seek peaceful ways of resolving domestic disputes, including through local leaders, probation offices, and the Police Child and Family Protection Unit, cautioning against exposing children to violence arising from adult disagreements,” Kasadha stated.
