Uganda’s newly appointed Honorary Consul of The Bahamas, Mrs. Anita Rukundo Tayebwa, has pledged to build strategic tourism partnerships, destination marketing frameworks, and knowledge-exchange programs between Uganda and the Caribbean island nation to accelerate Uganda’s international tourism earnings.
Mrs. Tayebwa formally presented her Letters of Credence to Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Adonia Ayebare, on Thursday evening in Kampala.
Speaking after the ceremony, Mrs. Tayebwa highlighted the immense potential for Uganda to learn from The Bahamas’ world-class tourism model. Despite its smaller geographic size and population, the Caribbean nation generated approximately $5.27 billion from over 12 million international visitors in 2025. By comparison, Uganda recorded 1.6 million visitors and generated $1.62 billion over the same period.
“We hope to bridge the gap between The Bahamas and Uganda,” Mrs. Tayebwa stated. “With this relationship, we hope to attract more people to visit Uganda by strengthening our international tourism marketing and learning from established global destinations.”

To narrow the revenue gap, the new consular mission will focus on key operational and investment pillars:
Destination Branding & Marketing: Positioning Uganda’s unique biodiversity—including mountain gorillas and chimpanzees—to global travelers.
High-Value Tourist Attraction: Adopting strategies from The Bahamas to attract ultra-wealthy, high-spending international tourists.
Hospitality & Resort Infrastructure: Facilitating joint-venture investments between Ugandan and Bahamian private sector operators.
Water-Based & Marine Tourism: Unlocking the untapped economic potential of Uganda’s water bodies, particularly Lake Victoria.
High-Level Endorsements from Government and Industry Leaders
Ambassador Adonia Ayebare expressed optimism regarding the diplomatic appointment, noting that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expects tangible economic benefits from the bilateral link.
“The figures speak for themselves; we will count on you to tap the best practices from them. Uganda will benefit immensely from your representation,” Amb. Ayebare remarked.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, commended his wife’s appointment in her own right, pointing out her proven track record in private sector execution. He emphasized that beyond mass tourist numbers, The Bahamas excels in capturing the luxury tourism market—a model Uganda can adopt for its national parks and eco-resorts.
Prominent Ugandan tourism mogul Amos Wekesa also welcomed the appointment, urging the consular office to prioritize marine and water-based tourism along Lake Victoria to maximize visitor length-of-stay and expenditure. Meanwhile, King Caesar Augustus Mulenga, the Honorary Consul of Vietnam to Uganda, noted that the move will strengthen trade, investment, and cultural ties between two fellow Commonwealth member states.
