Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered veteran journalist and political commentator Andrew Mwenda to immediately halt all public statements regarding the Tooro Kingdom.
The directive was issued in a statement posted on Gen. Muhoozi’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday night, following days of intense public commentary surrounding the succession process of the kingdom.
“I have instructed comrade @AndrewMwenda not to speak about the issues of Tooro again. He will stop it immediately,” Gen. Muhoozi stated.
CDF Reaffirms Solidarity with Grieving Kingdom
In the same statement, Gen. Muhoozi extended fresh condolences to the royal family and the Batooro people, reiterating the military and PLU leadership’s solidarity with the kingdom as it mourns late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
“Once again, as PLU we commiserate with the great Batooro people on the tragedy that befell all of us. May the soul of the late King Oyo rest in peace,” the CDF wrote.
The directive comes on the heels of King Oyo’s burial on Saturday, September 12, at the Karambi Royal Mausoleum in Fort Portal City. The monarch’s passing at the age of 34 triggered widespread public debate across traditional and social media over cultural protocols, royal lineage, and the succession process leading up to the enthronement of King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.

Supporters of Gen. Muhoozi and PLU welcomed the instruction, describing it as a necessary measure to protect a grieving community from unnecessary public friction during a culturally sensitive transition.
Commentators noted that Andrew Mwenda, a prominent native of Tooro and frequent political contributor, had actively engaged in public discussions regarding kingdom affairs following the monarch’s passing.
The CDF’s intervention is seen as an effort to calm public discourse, restore calm in social media circles, and allow established traditional institutions and elders to manage kingdom affairs without external media controversy.
