The political landscape for Uganda’s 2031 general elections is officially taking shape following the announcement that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, will contest for the country’s highest office.
The landmark declaration was delivered by Hon. David Kabanda, the Executive Secretary to the National Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). Kabanda confirmed he was specifically dispatched by Gen. Muhoozi to communicate the decision to the public.
According to the announcement, Gen. Muhoozi’s decision to seek the presidency has received the backing and approval of his father, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Muhoozi, who also serves as the National Chairman of the PLU, has increasingly been at the center of succession discussions, and this formal declaration ends years of speculation regarding his political ambitions.
Taking to social media, Gen. Muhoozi expressed absolute confidence in the upcoming race. “I will stand for the highest office in the land in 2031. And we will win by the grace of Almighty God,” he stated, projecting a sweeping victory with up to 90% of the vote.

The Patriotic League of Uganda has already set the groundwork for a massive nationwide campaign. Michael Mawanda, PLU’s director for mobilization and Member of Parliament for Igara East, revealed that the political pressure group has been actively collecting signatures in support of the General, with a target of reaching 19 million endorsements.
Mawanda noted that at the appropriate time, Gen. Muhoozi will unveil his manifesto, retire from the military, and begin active canvassing ahead of the 2031 polls. The endorsement has also drawn swift support from various political figures, including Members of Parliament and Resident District Commissioners, who have praised Muhoozi’s leadership and his anti-corruption stance.
As parties and political movements begin positioning themselves, Gen. Muhoozi’s anticipated presidential bid emerges as the most defining development in Uganda’s evolving political trajectory.
