Global ride-hailing pioneer Uber Technologies has announced a sweeping decision to completely wind down and terminate its operations in Uganda, effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The abrupt exit marks the end of years of digital transport operations centered primarily around the capital, Kampala. The local shutdown coincides with a broader global restructuring plan that sees the multinational cutting approximately 3,300 jobs worldwide as it pivots its capital investments toward autonomous vehicle technology and future driverless infrastructure.
In an official statement released by corporate headquarters, Uber noted that the difficult decision followed a thorough portfolio review of regional profitability, regulatory headwinds, and hyper-inflationary pressures.
For Uganda’s urban mobility sector, the exit brings an immediate halt to local app bookings, cutting off thousands of daily commuters who relied on the platform for safe and predictable transit across Greater Kampala.

The sudden departure delivers a severe economic blow to thousands of drivers in Kampala who depended on the platform as their primary source of livelihood. Transport sector stakeholders have criticized the abruptness of the wind-down, noting that little to no transition period was provided for local operators—many of whom manage vehicle loans and financing tied directly to their activity on the app.
With Uber officially offline, the local digital transport vacuum is expected to be aggressively contested by remaining market players. Competitors such as Bolt, SafeBoda, and Yego are poised to absorb the displaced customer base and driver pool, intensifying competition across Uganda’s urban transport landscape.
