A cloud of profound grief has fallen over Tooro Kingdom and the nation of Uganda following the official announcement of the death of the Omukama of Tooro, His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The 34-year-old monarch passed away at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026, while receiving specialized medical care in the United States.
The tragic news was officially confirmed late Thursday night by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Omutaka Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, putting an end to hours of intense public anxiety, panic, and conflicting rumors that had swept across social media earlier in the day.
“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening,” Prime Minister Rwomiire stated. “This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and the nation of Uganda.”
Addressing the kingdom and the nation during the late-night announcement, Prime Minister Rwomiire urged the Abatooro to remain united, calm, and prayerful during the difficult mourning period.
In a crucial message regarding cultural succession, the Premier assured kingdom subjects that the continuity of the Tooro Crown remains secure.
“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” Rwomiire confirmed.

Born on April 16, 1992, King Oyo ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, at the tender age of three following the sudden death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Rwamuhokya Olimi III. His ascension earned him a place in the Guinness World Records as the youngest reigning monarch in modern history.
Over his nearly 31-year reign, King Oyo grew from a toddler on the throne into an influential cultural leader and advocate for youth development, agricultural transformation, environmental conservation, and health awareness—notably serving as an ambassador in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In 2021, he launched the ambitous Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045 to promote sustainable socio-economic growth across Western Uganda.
Government leaders, traditional institutions, and citizens across the country have begun pouring out tributes, mourning the loss of a monarch whose life symbolised a unique blend of ancient royal tradition and modern African leadership. The Kingdom administration is expected to issue a comprehensive statement detailing funeral, cultural, and mourning arrangements.
