Uganda Airlines is gearing up for a massive operational shift that will see the national carrier expand its network to Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and new African destinations, alongside the highly anticipated introduction of domestic flights.
The ambitious strategic roadmap was presented on Monday by the airline’s executive leadership to the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, during a high-level meeting held at the Special Forces Command (SFC) headquarters in Entebbe.
Led by Acting Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake, the airline’s management detailed their vision for strengthening the commercial viability of the flag carrier. A core priority of the new plan involves maximizing the utilization of the airline’s existing fleet of aircraft to meet growing international demand while simultaneously tapping into the unexploited market for domestic air travel within Uganda.
Beyond opening new routes, the leadership team outlined structural shifts aimed at achieving long-term financial sustainability. Management announced plans to bring critical aircraft maintenance and ground-handling services in-house. This move is expected to drastically cut operational costs that are currently paid out to third-party contractors and help build the airline’s internal technical capacity.
To support this technical shift, the carrier has committed to training more Ugandan aviation personnel, a move designed to reduce the airline’s historical reliance on external and expatriate service providers.

Acting CEO Girma Wake noted that these strategies are part of broader, ongoing structural changes at Uganda Airlines aimed at improving corporate governance, stabilizing daily flight operations, and positioning the carrier for aggressive commercial growth. However, management stressed that the ultimate success of this expansion relies heavily on sustained financial and structural support from the government and key stakeholders.
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba welcomed the comprehensive presentation and pledged his backing for the airline’s strategic direction. The CDF emphasized that a robust and successful national carrier is vital to advancing Uganda’s international trade, fostering regional integration, and driving overall economic development.
The strategic presentation was also attended by top-tier executives, including Chief Finance Officer Allan Joel Kyeyune, Acting Manager for Human Resource and Administration Anne Apio, and Acting Chief Commercial Officer Shakila Lamar Rahim.
