Minister Oboth-Oboth Evacuated as Kadodi Dancers Storm VIP Area

What began as a formal cultural celebration quickly turned into a security nightmare for high-ranking officials at the Mutoto Cultural Grounds in Mbale City.

Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth, alongside several other high-profile dignitaries, was forced to make a hasty exit from the VIP pavilion after thousands of hyped-up Kadodi dancers and revelers breached the security barriers during the official launch of the Imbalu festival.

Representing the official guest leadership at the event, the Minister was seated in the designated VIP section when the massive crowd, driven by the intense, pulsating rhythms of traditional Kadodi drums, surged forward.

Security personnel on the ground were quickly overwhelmed by the sheer volume and energy of the cultural enthusiasts, who ultimately stormed the VIP stage.

With the security cordons compromised, the Minister’s protection detail had no choice but to abruptly evacuate him and other guests to safety away from the stampeding dancers.

The Mutoto Cultural Grounds hold deep historical and spiritual significance for the Bamasaba (Gishu) people. It serves as the traditional epicenter for the biennial Imbalu festival, a highly revered public circumcision ceremony that initiates boys into manhood. While the festival is famous for its electrifying dances and massive crowds, the intensity of this year’s launch clearly caught event organizers and VIP security off guard.

Despite the abrupt disruption in the VIP tent, the traditional rites and celebrations continued across the grounds, cementing Kadodi’s reputation as one of Uganda’s most powerful and uncontrollable cultural forces.
