Veteran opposition leader and four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye remains under intensive medical care at Mulago National Referral Hospital following a sudden health breakdown that led to his collapse during court proceedings in Kampala.
Medical personnel at the facility confirmed that Dr. Besigye was admitted directly to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where specialists are conducting comprehensive diagnostic assessments and monitoring his vital signs.
The emergency unfolded abruptly while Dr. Besigye was appearing before the tribunal for scheduled legal proceedings. Witnesses inside the courtroom reported that the veteran politician showed signs of severe physical distress and exhaustion before losing consciousness in the dock.
Immediate assistance was rendered by his legal team and court attendants before health personnel and security operatives stepped in to stabilize him. He was urgently rushed under high-speed armed escort to Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency medical intervention.
Members of his legal team expressed deep concern over his deteriorating condition, noting that repeated incarcerations and the demanding schedule of continuous legal battles have taken a heavy toll on his physical health.
Following his admission to the ICU, a heavy deployment of military and police personnel was established around the hospital precinct. Security forces mounted checkpoints along access roads leading to the specialized care unit, strictly regulating movement within the facility.
Several high-profile political figures, family members, and legal representatives who rushed to Mulago Hospital to assess Dr. Besigye’s condition faced restricted access as security personnel enforced tight protocol around the ICU wing.
Hospital authorities and official representatives have requested privacy while medical teams work to stabilize his condition, promising to issue formal updates once comprehensive tests are concluded.

This latest health crisis highlights long-standing concerns regarding Dr. Besigye’s physical well-being amidst his extended legal battles and periods of detention. Over the years, the 69-year-old political strategist has endured multiple injuries, exposure to teargas, and prolonged confinement resulting from his decadelong opposition leadership.
Political colleagues and civil rights advocates have renewed calls for the government to allow Dr. Besigye access to specialized, unhindered medical treatment, warning against keeping high-profile political figures under strict detention while facing complex medical complications.
