World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has highly commended the Ugandan government for its prompt and capable response to the ongoing Ebola health crisis.
During his high-level visit to the country, the WHO chief expressed strong confidence that the dangerous outbreak could be successfully contained through sustained regional collaboration, cross-border trust, and swift leadership.
Dr. Tedros officially arrived in Uganda on Monday, June 8, 2026, fresh from a critical and high-stakes assessment tour in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The DRC is currently battling a significantly larger and rapidly spreading outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a highly contagious pathogen for which there are currently no approved vaccines or targeted treatments.
In a public statement shared on the social media platform X, Dr. Tedros highlighted the effectiveness of Uganda’s strategic defense mechanisms against the cross-border spread of the virus. He noted that the rigorous screening protocols rapidly established at Uganda’s land borders have been remarkably instrumental in detecting and managing cases flowing from the epicenter of the outbreak in the DRC.
The country’s surveillance, testing, and case management systems are doing steady work, Dr. Tedros posted. He further assured the public and the international community that both the WHO and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) are actively on the ground, fully supporting the government-led emergency response to ensure the outbreak does not escalate further.
The WHO Director-General’s optimism aligns with the latest epidemiological data released by Ugandan health authorities. According to a comprehensive weekend situation report from Uganda’s Ministry of Health, the country had registered a cumulative total of 19 confirmed Ebola cases as of June 6, 2026.
Crucially, health officials reported zero new cases in their latest specific update, sending a strong and encouraging signal that the aggressive containment measures, including border closures and mandatory quarantine protocols, are yielding positive results.
Of the 19 recorded cases, the ministry detailed that 14 were imported directly from the DRC, while the remaining five are Ugandan nationals who were exposed to the virus.
The health ministry further reported that 13 patients are currently receiving specialized medical care in active admissions at designated isolation centers. In a positive turn of events, four individuals have fully recovered and have been successfully discharged.

Unfortunately, two deaths have been registered so far since the outbreak spilled over into Uganda. Both fatalities fall under the category of imported cases from the neighboring country. Dr. Tedros extended his deepest condolences to the grieving families of the deceased, emphasizing the tragic human cost of the regional health emergency.
Despite the inherently complex cross-border dynamics and the porous nature of the shared boundary with the DRC, Uganda’s Ministry of Health has consistently reassured the public that the outbreak remains tightly managed and that the country is fundamentally safe. The government has urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant, adhering to all public health advisories and hygiene protocols.
Dr. Tedros echoed this national optimism while concluding his remarks. He stressed that while the Bundibugyo strain presents a unique set of challenges due to the lack of licensed medical countermeasures, the key to ultimately defeating the regional threat lies in unwavering partnership, swift leadership, and transparent cross-border trust between affected nations.
