The Uganda Police Force has arrested three suspects in connection with the tragic murder of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo. The 27-year-old sports star died following a brutal incident of suspected mob justice in Kampala.
The active murder investigation, handled by detectives at Kira Road Police Station, led to a swift dragnet over the weekend. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala confirmed the developments, identifying the three suspects in custody as Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, and Namukose Juliet. The trio is currently being detained to assist law enforcement agencies with ongoing inquiries.
According to police case files, the incident occurred on the afternoon of June 5, 2026, around 2:00 p.m. in Masulira Zone, Bukoto I Parish, located in the Nakawa Division of Kampala.
Preliminary findings indicate that Gongodyo, a resident of Najjera in Kira Municipality and a student at Makerere University, was cornered by an angry crowd. Members of the public allegedly attacked the rugby star after falsely accusing him of snatching a woman’s handbag.
First responders from the police rushed to the scene to rescue the severely injured athlete from the mob. He was immediately evacuated to Mulago National Referral Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Unfortunately, due to the severe nature of the blunt-force trauma sustained during the assault, Gongodyo succumbed to his injuries at approximately 7:00 p.m. that same evening.
Following the tragic loss of life, the Uganda Police Force issued a strong condemnation against the culture of vigilantism and lawlessness. Security officials emphasized that taking the law into one’s own hands bypasses the legal framework and can lead to the senseless death of innocent citizens.
Kawala stated that the police strongly condemn all forms of mob justice and reiterate their call to members of the public to report suspected criminal activities to the relevant authorities.
She noted that mob action undermines the rule of law and results in the loss of innocent lives. Authorities have indicated that the tracking of more suspects remains active, and additional details will be provided as forensic inquiries progress.
