Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among was conspicuously missing from the inaugural sitting of the 12th Parliament on Monday, May 25, 2026, where lawmakers convened to formally elect the new legislative leadership.
Her absence from the highly anticipated plenary session, which saw Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth elected as the new Speaker in a landslide victory, marks a dramatic and silent end to her once-powerful reign over the legislative arm of government.
While traditionally, outgoing leaders attend such historic transition sessions, Among’s non-attendance was entirely expected. The Bukedea Woman MP remains strictly confined to her private residence in Nakasero, Kampala, having been placed under de facto house arrest over the weekend.
Elite operatives from the Special Forces Command (SFC) disarmed her security detail and took full operational control of her home in a pre-dawn raid on Saturday.
In addition to her physical confinement, the state has frozen all her bank accounts as part of an aggressive, multi-agency forensic investigation into allegations of massive corruption, illicit enrichment, and the mishandling of parliamentary expenditures during the 11th Parliament.
The probe, led by the Inspectorate of Government (IG), the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA), was sharply escalated following the impounding of her controversial Shs3.4 billion Rolls-Royce last week.

Inside the parliamentary chambers, the transition of power proceeded seamlessly without her. With President Yoweri Museveni watching closely, the newly sworn-in Members of Parliament overwhelmingly voted for the Oboth-Oboth and Thomas Tayebwa ticket, fully endorsing the ruling National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) strategic overhaul of the House leadership.
For Among, missing the very session that officially installed her successors cements her dramatic fall from grace. Stripped of her political clout, mobility, and financial lifelines, the former Speaker now awaits the next phase of the intense legal and forensic battles surrounding her accumulated wealth and tenure.
