Defence Minister Jacob Markson Oboth-Oboth has officially been elected as the Speaker of the 12th Parliament of Uganda, securing a massive landslide victory in a highly anticipated plenary session held on Monday, May 25, 2026.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was physically present to witness the historic transition of power, which caps off weeks of intense political maneuvering, high-level security deployments, and a dramatic anti-corruption purge that ousted the previous legislative leadership.
Riding on the overwhelming endorsement of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) and the military-linked Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), Oboth-Oboth faced virtually no formidable resistance on the floor of the House. He comfortably defeated token opposition candidates, sweeping the vote to take control of the country’s third-highest political office.
The seamless election process served as a stark contrast to the chaotic build-up to the vote. Just days prior, outgoing Speaker Anita Annet Among was forced to bow out of the race, subsequently having her bank accounts frozen and being placed under house arrest by Special Forces Command (SFC) operatives amid a sweeping state forensic probe into her administration’s financial expenditures.

Following Oboth-Oboth’s decisive victory, incumbent Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa was also overwhelmingly re-elected, officially cementing the Oboth-Oboth-Tayebwa leadership ticket that had been brokered by top state actors, including Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Speaking shortly after the vote, President Museveni congratulated the new leadership team, emphasizing that the 12th Parliament must now focus on strict accountability, industrialization, and service delivery rather than personal enrichment.
For political observers, Oboth-Oboth’s elevation signifies a total recalibration of the legislative arm of government, bringing it in tight alignment with the executive and the security establishment for the 2026–2031 term.
