The ruling National Resistance Movement Central Executive Committee (CEC) has officially given its nod of approval to Defence Minister Jacob Oboth-Oboth and incumbent Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa as the party’s official flagbearers for the top leadership of the 12th Parliament.
The decisive endorsement was reached during a high-stakes CEC meeting chaired by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. The organ’s resolution effectively formalizes the dramatic political shifts seen over the past week and seals the fate of the incoming legislative administration ahead of the parliamentary voting scheduled for Monday, May 25.
By giving the nod to Oboth-Oboth for the Speakership and maintaining Tayebwa as the candidate for Deputy Speaker, the party’s top organ has aligned itself with the positions aggressively pushed by the military-backed Patriotic League of Uganda and Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

The move creates a unified and formidable ticket that faces virtually no resistance within the ruling party’s massive legislative majority.
Insiders reveal that the meeting was smooth and conclusive, a sharp contrast to previous tense CEC sessions, following the sudden withdrawal of outgoing Speaker Anita Annet Among from the race over the weekend.
With Among currently under strict 24-hour house arrest at her Nakasero residence and her financial assets frozen amid a sweeping state anti-corruption investigation, CEC members focused on ensuring a seamless and stable transition of power.
With the ruling party’s highest decision-making organ now fully behind the Oboth-Oboth-Tayebwa ticket, NRM Members of Parliament are expected to caucus and rubber-stamp the decision ahead of the official voting on the floor of the House.
The development brings a sense of structural predictability back to the ruling establishment after weeks of highly charged internal factional warfare.
