As the Buganda Kingdom prepares to mark thirteen years since the appointment of Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga on May 12, the Premier has shared a comprehensive reflection on a decade defined by institutional renewal and economic mobilization.
Since he was first entrusted with the kingdom’s instruments of power by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II in 2013, Mayiga has steered a strategy aimed at restoring Buganda’s prestige through self-reliance and modernization. His reflection centers on a vision that prioritizes the protection of the throne and the promotion of the kingdom’s five key strategic pillars.
The Katikkiro pointed to landmark infrastructural achievements as symbols of the kingdom’s collective resilience. He specifically highlighted the completion of the Masengere building and the significant progress in reconstructing the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as major milestones achieved through the community-led Etoffaali fundraising drive.
These projects, according to Mayiga, were not just about bricks and mortar but represented a shift toward financial transparency and administrative efficiency within the kingdom’s government at Mengo.

Economic empowerment has been another hallmark of his thirteen-year tenure, particularly through the Emwanyi Terimba (Coffee is Undisputed) campaign.
This initiative has revitalized coffee farming across Buganda, encouraging thousands of households to improve their livelihoods through commercial agriculture.
Mayiga emphasized that a wealthy and hard-working populace is essential for the kingdom’s stability and the dignity of the Kabaka’s subjects in the modern era.
Looking ahead, the Katikkiro reaffirmed his commitment to the health and education sectors, citing ongoing efforts in maternal health and the fight against HIV/AIDS.
He concluded his reflection by calling for continued unity among the people of Buganda, urging them to stay focused on the kingdom’s goals despite the evolving political and social challenges in the country.
His message remains one of hope and a call for a qualitative leap into a future where Buganda remains a beacon of progress within Uganda.
