The National Unity Platform (NUP) community is in mourning following the passing of Edith Katende, the wife of the party’s Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro. Katende passed away this morning after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Friends, family, and political associates have since flooded social media with tributes, describing the deceased as a pillar of strength who stood firmly by her husband during his various political and legal challenges.

Edith Katende had been undergoing treatment for cancer for an extended period. Despite the aggressive nature of the illness, those close to the family noted her resilience and the unwavering support provided by Mufumbiro and the wider NUP fraternity throughout her hospitalization.
The party leadership, led by President Robert Kyagulanyi, has expressed deep condolences to Mufumbiro and his children. In a statement, the party noted that the loss is not only personal to the Mufumbiro family but is felt by the entire “People Power” movement.
Throughout Mufumbiro’s public life, including his recent legal battles and party duties, Katende remained a constant support system. Her presence was often noted during court sessions and party functions, where she stood as a symbol of domestic stability amidst the high-pressure environment of Ugandan opposition politics.
Tributes from across the political spectrum have begun to pour in, with many praising her character and the dignity with which she handled her health struggles. Funeral arrangements and burial details are expected to be announced by the family in the coming hours.
The community continues to offer prayers for the Mufumbiro and Katende families as they navigate this difficult period of grief.
