The Church of Uganda has launched an official investigation into a shocking incident where a senior priest exchanged blows with a local political leader right in the middle of a Sunday church service in Abim District.
The unprecedented altercation occurred on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at All Saints Church in Abim. The brawl involved Rev. Canon Richard Ongom, a retired clergyman currently serving on contract in the Diocese of North Karamoja, and a man identified as the area LC2 Chairman.
A dramatic video currently circulating on social media captured the bizarre confrontation. The footage shows a heated argument at the front of the church quickly escalating into a physical scuffle, with the two men exchanging blows at the altar before frantic congregants intervened to pull them apart.
According to eyewitness reports, the chaos began when the local leader walked to the front of the church during the service and requested to address the congregation. He reportedly told the priest that he had urgent, security-related information to share with the worshippers following a recent security meeting with Abim Town Council officials.
However, Rev. Ongom fiercely rejected the request. Standing his ground at the pulpit, the clergyman repeatedly ordered the politician to leave the altar, firmly stating, “I am in charge here. You will not speak.”
The verbal disagreement rapidly deteriorated into a physical confrontation. Following the scuffle, the LC2 chairman claimed that the Reverend had bitten him on the shoulder during the melee, leaving him with physical injuries.

Church of Uganda Speaks Out
In response to the viral video and the ensuing public outrage, the Church of Uganda issued an official statement late Sunday night, condemning the violence and assuring the public that disciplinary mechanisms have been activated.
“Church of Uganda has learnt of a video circulating on social media showing a scuffle involving Rev. Canon Richard Ongom, a retired clergy currently serving on contract in Abim Diocese of North Karamoja, and a Christian whose identity is yet to be established,” read the statement, which was signed by Balaam Muheebwa, the acting Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda.
Muheebwa expressed deep concern over the unholy spectacle, noting that the matter is now being handled through internal ecclesiastical structures.
“We are concerned by the incident and wish to assure the Church and the general public that the matter is being followed up through the appropriate Church structures. Relevant administrative and pastoral measures will be taken upon establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Muheebwa added.
The provincial secretariat has urged Christians in the North Karamoja Diocese and the wider Anglican community to remain calm and in prayer as the investigation proceeds.
