Ugandan Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has officially incorporated his father President Yoweri Museveni’s name into his own, unveiling the brand “MKM” as his political movement accelerates mobilization for the 2031 presidential election.
The military chief announced the decision via social media, confirming his official name change to Muhoozi Kainerugaba Museveni.
“From now on my name is Muhoozi Kainerugaba Museveni. MKM,” he declared on X, signaling a definitive step toward consolidating his political identity.
Shortly after the rebranding announcement, Gen. MKM signaled plans to launch nationwide political tours, promising a major civic awakening across the country. “The political wave that is coming, Uganda has never seen. Ugandans will speak with one voice for renewal and greatness. I will visit every corner of our great country and speak to our people. Abaana bakuzire [the children have grown],” he added.

The adoption of the Museveni name drew swift celebration from his core political alignment within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) and the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Dr. Balaam Barugahara noted that supporters across the Bunyoro and Tooro sub-regions would affectionately add the traditional praise name (empaako) “Amooti” to his new moniker, calling him “MKM Amooti.” Similarly, Kasambya County MP and PLU personality Daudi Kabanda referred to the general as “General MKM Inkotanye.”
The 52-year-old general first formally declared his intention to seek the presidency on August 25, confirming that he would contest in 2031 and expressing confidence in securing his father’s backing. Having previously stepped back from the 2026 election cycle to support President Museveni’s ongoing tenure, Muhoozi’s official pivot to 2031 has effectively reshaped Uganda’s long-term succession debate.
Behind the scenes, the Patriotic League of Uganda—a civic organization operating within the broader NRM umbrella chaired by Muhoozi—has significantly intensified its ground operations.
On September 1, Daudi Kabanda formally unveiled the 2031 roadmap at the PLU headquarters in Nakasero, Kampala, during a high-level meeting with MPs, regional coordinators, and political allies.
To demonstrate grassroots strength, the PLU launched a massive nationwide signature collection exercise across all 146 districts of Uganda. While initial targets were set at 20 million endorsements, subsequent mobilization drives expanded the objective to 25 million registered signatures.
The endorsement campaign has garnered notable support from prominent political and business figures, including business moguls Sudhir Ruparelia and Godfrey Kirumira, former minister Capt. Mike Mukula, and former opposition lawmaker Odonga Otto.
With the addition of the Museveni name and a growing organizational footprint spanning the entire country, Gen. MKM and the PLU are positioning 2031 as a definitive transition point in Ugandan political history.
