Family Court Resolves High-Profile Dispute Over Ivan Ssemwanga’s Multi-Billion Estate

The curtain has finally fallen on one of Uganda’s longest-running and most publicized celebrity estate battles. The Family Division of the High Court has ruled in favor of the children of the late South African-based Ugandan tycoon, Ivan ‘Don’ Ssemwanga, granting them primary administrative control over his vast multi-billion-shilling estate through their mother and legal guardian, Zarinah ‘Zari’ Hassan.  

The landmark ruling comes after all parties involved in the dispute reached an amicable, out-of-court agreement. The decision officially puts an end to nearly nine years of bitter wrangling, emotional public spats, and legal uncertainty that began immediately after Ssemwanga’s sudden death in May 2017.  

With this consensus, the court has decreed that Ssemwanga’s sprawling assets—spread across Uganda and South Africa—will be strictly preserved and managed for the sole benefit and future security of his three sons: Pinto, Quincy, and George Ssemwanga.  

The feud over Ssemwanga’s estate has been a staple of East African entertainment news for years. Following Ssemwanga’s passing from a stroke in 2017, some of his close relatives, including his paternal uncles and brothers, openly challenged Zari’s right to manage the family businesses. They argued that because she had separated from Ssemwanga years before his death, she had no legal claim to his wealth.  

However, Zari consistently maintained that her primary goal was to protect the inheritance of their three children, who were minors at the time of their father’s passing.  

This newly ratified court agreement permanently resolves those arguments. By appointing Zari Hassan as the primary legal administrator on behalf of the children, the court has officially sidelined any external interference from Ssemwanga’s extended family, ensuring the estate remains intact.

Ivan Ssemwanga was famously the leader of the flamboyant “Rich Gang” socialite group. Behind the showy exterior, however, he was a highly astute businessman who built a massive empire.  

The properties and businesses now secured under the children’s name include:

 Brooklyn City College: A highly successful chain of private educational institutions in South Africa with multiple branches across Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Durban.  

 South African Real Estate: Prime residential properties, including high-end houses in the upscale suburbs of Sandton and Pretoria.

 Ugandan Properties: Premium real estate assets in Kampala, including properties in Bunga, Munyonyo, and Mutungo.

Legal experts and family observers have widely praised the development, calling it a significant victory for child rights and estate planning in Uganda. The amicable conclusion ensures that the children will not have their inheritance eroded by endless, costly litigation fees.

With the legal storm finally cleared, the focus now shifts entirely to the long-term growth, professional audit, and structured preservation of the “Rich Gang” founder’s legacy for the next generation.
