In a major development affecting international travel and trade, Saudi Arabia has officially suspended all travel to and from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan. The sweeping restrictions include a complete halt on the issuance of all types of entry visas for travellers arriving from these nations as a precautionary measure against the spread of the Ebola virus.
The sudden travel ban, announced by the Saudi Public Health Authority (Weqaya), aims to protect the Kingdom’s public health and prevent the cross-border transmission of the highly contagious disease amid ongoing regional outbreaks.
The 21-Day Travel Restriction
Under the new directives, Saudi citizens are strictly barred from travelling to Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan. Furthermore, the entry ban firmly applies to any foreign nationals attempting to enter the Kingdom who have ties to these regions.
The Saudi Public Health Authority clarified that the restriction also applies to passengers arriving via transit or third-party countries if they have been present in any of the three affected African nations within 21 days prior to their arrival in Saudi Arabia.
Authorities emphasized that the suspension of all entry visas will remain in effect until further notice, pending continuous assessments of the epidemiological situation in the affected regions.
While Uganda and its immediate neighbours face direct travel and visa bans, Saudi Arabia has also ramped up health precautions for individuals arriving from other countries in the East and Central African region.
Travellers arriving from Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and the Republic of the Congo (Brazzaville) will now be subjected to enhanced health screenings at all Saudi entry points. These measures include reinforced disease surveillance, rigorous temperature checks, and early response procedures to detect any potential health threats.

Despite the stringent travel embargo, the Saudi Public Health Authority reassured its citizens and residents that the overall public health situation within the Kingdom remains completely stable. Officials confirmed that no suspected or confirmed Ebola cases have been recorded in Saudi Arabia since the preventive measures were initiated.
The Saudi government described the immediate travel bans as proactive, preventive steps designed to safeguard citizens, residents, and international visitors.
Health authorities in Riyadh stated that their emergency response systems continue to operate around the clock in close coordination with both domestic and international health agencies. The government intends to continuously update its travel recommendations as the outbreak evolves, maintaining all necessary health protocols to strengthen the Kingdom’s preparedness.
For Ugandans, the ban temporarily halts business trips, religious pilgrimages, and the movement of migrant workers to the Gulf nation, causing immediate disruptions until the regional health concerns are fully addressed.
