In a heartfelt reflection shared across his official social media platforms, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga is commemorating 13 years since Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II appointed him as the Kingdom of Buganda’s Prime Minister. What began as a call to service has evolved into a period defined by bold initiatives, institutional strengthening, and a renewed spirit of self-determination among the Baganda people.

One of Mayiga’s flagship achievements remains the Ettoffali campaign , a groundbreaking kingdom-wide mobilization effort designed to shift mindsets and promote self-reliance. While the drive successfully raised around Shs10 billion, the Katikkiro stresses that the true victory lay in awakening a collective belief that Buganda can thrive through its own resources and unity.
Over the past 13 years, the kingdom has recorded significant milestones under his leadership:
Governance and Infrastructure: Comprehensive reforms have modernized administrative systems at Bulange and across various kingdom institutions. Landmark projects include the full reconstruction of the historic Kasubi Royal Tombs, which were devastated by fire in 2010, and the development of iconic structures such as the Masengere buildings.
Media and Strategic Partnerships: The establishment of BBS Terefayina, Buganda’s own television station, has strengthened the kingdom’s voice. Mayiga has also forged powerful alliances with investors and corporate giants including Airtel and Centenary Bank, driving developments in prime areas like Kigo and Ssentema.

Health, Culture, and Community: The Kabaka has emerged as a continental leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS. High-profile community events such as the massive Kabaka Birthday Run , now one of Africa’s largest public runs and the widely popular Masaza Cup football tournament have become powerful tools for mobilization and cultural pride.
Empowerment and Legacy: The kingdom has continued to nurture creative talent musicians, dancers, and performers while the Kabaka Education Fund has transformed the lives of thousands of students.
Economic programs like Emmwanyi Terimba and cooperative initiatives such as PEWOSA SACCOs are actively combating poverty and boosting household incomes.
Mayiga also expressed pride in Buganda’s growing global influence, noting the rising appreciation of the Luganda language and the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage.
As he looks back on this impactful journey, the Katikkiro’s message is one of gratitude, renewed purpose, and unwavering commitment to building a stronger, more self-reliant Buganda for future generations.
