quiet stretch of highway in Nwoya District became the scene of a catastrophic road incident early this morning when a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a heavy-duty trailer claimed the lives of seven people.
The disaster unfolded at approximately 1:15 AM today in Lapok Mor Village, casting a somber shadow over the northern transit route as emergency responders worked through the dark to extricate survivors from the mangled wreckage.
According to preliminary reports from the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the collision involved an Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Coaches and a Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer. The bus was traveling from Arua when the driver reportedly attempted a high-risk maneuver, trying to overtake two vehicles simultaneously.
This tactical error placed the passenger bus directly in the path of the oncoming trailer, resulting in a violent impact that tore through the front sections of both vehicles.
Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed that four individuals perished instantly at the scene. The death toll tragically rose to seven a few hours later as three more victims succumbed to their extensive injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
In total, sixteen other passengers sustained various degrees of injury and are currently receiving emergency medical care at Anak Hospital, where medical teams have been stretched to handle the sudden influx of trauma patients.

The bus driver, identified by police as Abugo Mandella Kadin, survived the impact and was immediately taken into police custody to assist with the ongoing criminal investigation. Police officials noted that statements from survivors are forming a crucial part of their initial findings.
Multiple witnesses recovering from the crash informed investigators that the vehicle had been driven recklessly for a significant portion of the night journey. Passengers claimed they had raised desperate concerns about the high speeds and aggressive overtaking maneuvers, but their warnings were allegedly ignored by the bus crew just moments before the fatal attempt at Lapok Mor.
As the day progresses, a heavy police presence remains anchored at the crash site to facilitate the complex removal of the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow. A comprehensive mechanical inspection of both vehicles is expected to follow, as traffic investigators work to officially map the sequence of events.
For now, law enforcement is focusing heavily on the legal proceedings against the driver in custody while families rush to Anak Hospital to check on their loved ones.
