Police in Sheema District have launched a massive manhunt for a driver who fled the scene after his speeding vehicle rammed into a crowd of pedestrians, killing seven people instantly and leaving two minors critically injured.
The fatal crash occurred early Saturday morning, at approximately 6:30 AM, in Rushara, Kabwohe Division along the busy Mbarara–Bushenyi highway.
According to eyewitnesses, the victims were walking back to their homes after attending overnight prayer services at St. Rose Catholic Church and Bethel International Ministries (BBMI) in Kabwohe town.
The suspect, driving a Toyota Fielder with registration number UA 702DL, reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed before ploughing into the unsuspecting pedestrians.
Nsimire Maria Respa, a survivor from Kachwamba in Mukinga, recounted the horrifying moments. “The vehicle was speeding. It first knocked a child, before ramming into a group of women who were walking along the road,” she said.
While the identities of the seven deceased pedestrians were not immediately verified, their bodies have been conveyed to the Kabwohe Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examinations.
