The National Unity Platform (NUP) and the people of Kalangala are in mourning following the sudden death of Hon. Helen Nakimuli, the District Woman Member of Parliament. Her party confirmed the heartbreaking news on Monday, stating that the 41-year-old legislator passed away following a surgical procedure that was unfortunately unsuccessful.
The news has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, coming just months after her successful re-election in the January 2026 polls.

NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, led the nation in mourning, describing Nakimuli’s death as a massive blow to the struggle for a better Uganda.
“Hellen Nakimuli was a devoted leader whose service to her people was marked by courage, humility, and unwavering commitment,” Kyagulanyi stated. He emphasized that her passing is a loss not just to the party, but to the entire country.
While the specific medical facility and the nature of the surgery remain private, NUP officials indicated that the suddenness of her passing has left colleagues and family in deep distress.

During her time in the 11th and 12th Parliaments, Nakimuli established herself as a fierce advocate for hard-to-reach island communities. Her legislative work focused on:
• Healthcare Infrastructure: Bridging the gap in medical services for the 84 islands of Kalangala.
• Empowerment: Creating economic opportunities specifically for women and youth in the fishing industry.
• Grassroots Mobilization: Nakimuli was regarded as one of the most accessible leaders within the NUP, consistently prioritizing the needs of marginalized populations.
At only 41, Nakimuli was seen as a rising star within the opposition, serving as a vital bridge between the party leadership and grassroots constituents. Her death creates a significant vacuum in Parliament, where she was known for her articulate defense of her voters’ interests.
By press time, the family had not yet released a formal statement regarding the final cause of death or burial arrangements. NUP leadership has called for unity and strength as the people of Kalangala prepare to bid farewell to their dedicated representative.
