Justine Nameere, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, has been declared the winner of the Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament seat following a court-ordered vote recount.
The recount took place from late January to February 1, 2026, under the supervision of Masaka Chief Magistrate Albert Asiimwe. It was ordered after Nameere challenged the initial results from the January 15, 2026, general election.
In the final tally, Nameere received 25,502 votes, the highest among the candidates. This overturned the earlier declaration that gave victory to Rose Nalubowa of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who had been announced with around 25,443 votes in the provisional results.
Nameere’s win came after the process revealed discrepancies in ballot counts, mismatched numbers at some polling stations, and other issues like suspicious ballot boxes.
The recount examined votes from all polling stations in Masaka City. It happened at the Electoral Commission offices, with Nameere present for parts of it. Nalubowa did not attend the full process and raised concerns about the handling of materials.
This result marks an important shift in the Masaka City political scene. Masaka has often been seen as an opposition stronghold, but Nameere’s victory shows gains for the NRM in the region after the 2026 elections.
Nameere, who also serves as Senior Presidential Advisor on Greater Masaka Affairs, now prepares to take up her role as Woman MP for Masaka City in the new parliamentary term.
