The Ugandan arts fraternity is mourning the brutal murder of veteran musician Moses Matovu, the revered 77-year-old founder and leader of Afrigo Band.
Following a swift manhunt, a joint security team has successfully apprehended Vincent Arnold Nsamba, the prime suspect in the fatal attack. Nsamba was smoked out of a hideout in Ocheng Ward, Yesu Amala, located in Nansana Division, Wakiso District, just hours after fleeing the crime scene.
According to police, his arrest was facilitated after his mother was detained and subsequently led investigators to his location. Following the arrest, homicide detectives on Friday, September 25, searched Nsamba’s residence, recovering the jacket, shirt, and trousers he allegedly wore during the fatal assault.

The tragic incident occurred early Thursday morning, September 24, at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala revealed that preliminary investigations point to a domestic confrontation involving a woman identified as Rose Tusiime. Matovu reportedly visited Tusiime’s residence at approximately 5:30 a.m.
“It is alleged that as he left the rental in the company of the lady, they were confronted by a male suspect (Nsamba) reported to have an affair with the same lady,” SP Kawala stated.
Preliminary findings indicate that an altercation broke out, during which Matovu was severely injured while attempting to intervene and stop Nsamba from physically assaulting Tusiime. The elderly musician was rushed to nearby Kibuli Hospital by a local boda boda rider, but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Matovu’s shocking death—a fatal altercation linked to a romantic dispute at a woman’s muzigo (one-room apartment)—has drawn immediate and painful parallels to other high-profile murders in Uganda’s history:
Gerald Kiddu (1997): The circumstances heavily mirror the unresolved 1997 murder of top rally driver Gerald Kiddu, who was killed in the muzigo of a woman he was visiting.
Maj. Gen. James Kazini (2009): In November 2009, the former UPDF army commander was famously bludgeoned to death by his girlfriend, Lydia Draru, during a domestic altercation at her rented house in Namuwongo.
Mowzey Radio (2018): Within the music industry, the incident brings back fresh memories of vocalist Moses Ssekibogo (Mowzey Radio), who died in February 2018 after sustaining severe head injuries during a bar brawl in Entebbe. Similar to Nsamba’s capture, Radio’s killer, Godfrey Wamala, was arrested days later while hiding out in Kyengera.
Born on June 19, 1949, Moses Matovu was a cultural titan in Uganda. As the primary visionary behind Afrigo Band—founded in 1975—he led Uganda’s longest-lasting and most influential live music group for nearly five decades.
Nsamba currently remains in police custody at Kabalagala Police Station as homicide investigators prepare to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
