The newly enthroned Omukama of Tooro, King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has completed his first traditional rituals at the Karambi royal burial ground, marking a major milestone in the formal installation of the monarch following the burial of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Escorted to the sacred grounds by the head of the Babiito royal clan, Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi, senior Babiito elders, and key members of the royal family, King Edward performed ancestral rites designed to link his new reign directly to the lineage and cultural heritage of the Tooro monarchy.
The rituals took place shortly after the late King Oyo was returned to the earth, bringing the kingdom’s nine-day official mourning period to a close and shifting national attention toward the enthronement of his successor.
The sacred ceremony provided an early public indication of the new monarch’s active engagement with Tooro’s long-standing cultural institutions.
Among the notable figures in attendance was the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, who is also closely associated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU). The presence of government officials alongside senior Babiito elders underscored both the cultural and national significance of the proceedings.
The rituals at Karambi highlight the enduring role of the royal burial ground in the kingdom’s traditional governance, where ancestral connection remains vital to establishing the legitimacy and spiritual authority of the Babiito dynasty.

The traditional rites come amid heightened public attention surrounding the succession process in Tooro, following debates among royal factions prior to King Oyo’s burial.
Earlier in the mourning period, the Royal Succession Committee had initially selected George Desmond Kamurasi as its preferred candidate before the royal clan council formally enthroned Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I at St. John’s Cathedral. The evolving process generated varied interpretations of Tooro’s customs regarding the appropriate bodies for determining the monarch.
However, Saturday’s rites at Karambi signal that the traditional transition is now moving forward, as the royal family and clan elders begin integrating King Edward into Tooro’s established heritage.
The enthronement of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I officially opens a new chapter for the Tooro Kingdom following the passing of King Oyo at the age of 34 after a 31-year reign.
