Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma was on Wednesday, September 9, officially named as the successor to the late Omukama of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Kijanangoma, a news anchor and editor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC TV), is now set to ascend the throne as the 14th monarch of the Tooro Kingdom following the passing of King Oyo on August 27 at the age of 34.
The announcement brings clarity to the kingdom’s succession after weeks of intense public anticipation and consultations by the 21-member Babiito royal clan committee chaired by Omujwera Musuuga Charles Kamurasi.

Prince Kijanangoma’s naming comes just days before the late King Oyo is laid to rest on Saturday, September 12, at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal City.
In a poignant historic alignment, September 12 marks exactly 31 years to the day since King Oyo officially became king in 1995. Oyo ascended the throne at the age of three following the sudden death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, and ruled under a regency until attaining adulthood in 2010.
As the designated successor, Prince Kijanangoma will perform key traditional burial rites during Saturday’s ceremonies in accordance with Tooro custom, signaling his official assumption of royal responsibilities before the Kingdom and the nation.
Further details regarding the schedule for Kijanangoma’s formal coronation ceremonies will be announced by the Babiito royal elders following the conclusion of the official mourning period.
