A major royal dispute has erupted within Tooro Kingdom after senior leaders of the Babiito Royal Family formally rejected statements claiming that the late Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, left behind a prince as his heir.
The pushback comes days after Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki announced the monarch’s passing in the United States, during which he publicly assured kingdom subjects that King Oyo left behind a son to succeed him on the throne.
However, in statements issued on Sunday and Monday, the head of the Babiito Royal Clan, Chief Prince (Omuzana) Charles Kamurasi, alongside Senior Princess (Batebe) Elizabeth Bagaya, dismissed the Prime Minister’s claims as completely baseless and culturally inaccurate.
“His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was not married and had no children, male or female,” Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi clarified. “Any claims that he leaves behind a prince heir are untrue, misleading, and contrary to the known facts of the Royal Family.”

Princess Elizabeth Bagaya emphasized that the traditional processes governing succession in Tooro Kingdom are strictly defined by centuries of Babiito custom and royal protocol.
According to Tooro royal tradition:
Marriage and Progeny: A reigning Omukama’s children must be born within recognized royal protocols. King Oyo passed away at age 34 without having contracted a traditional or official marriage (Omuhango), nor had he fathered any children.
Selection of Successor: In the absence of a direct lineal heir (a son), the responsibility of selecting and announcing the next Omukama rests entirely with the Supreme Clan Council of the Babiito royal lineage, led by Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi (Omuzana) and the Batebe (Senior Princess).
Princess Bagaya cautioned kingdom officials and the public against spreading unverified reports regarding the succession, noting that the royal family alone holds the authority to guide the kingdom through the traditional rites of succession.
The contradiction between the Kingdom Administration led by Premier Rwomiire and the Babiito Royal Clan has heightened tensions among kingdom subjects in Fort Portal and across the Tooro region.
Sources within the royal palace suggest that the Prime Minister’s initial announcement was intended to calm anxiety and prevent panic following the sudden news of the King’s death. However, royal elders led by Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi insisted that factual accuracy and strict adherence to cultural rites must precede any public statements regarding the Crown.
The Babiito clan elders confirmed that official succession meetings are underway behind closed doors in accordance with Tooro customs. A formal announcement detailing the designated successor from the royal lineage, along with the official burial program for King Oyo, will be made by Chief Prince Charles Kamurasi and the Babiito Royal Clan at an appropriate time.
