The Ministry of Works and Transport, in coordination with the Uganda Police Force and the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC), has launched a comprehensive investigation into a horrific collision between a passenger train and a school bus on Friday morning. The tragic accident, which occurred at the Namumira railway level crossing in Kyetume, Mukono Municipality, left one teacher dead and dozens of high school students nursing severe injuries.
The ill-fated incident occurred at approximately 6:00 AM on Friday, July 10, 2026. The collision involved an early morning passenger train commuting from Mukono to Kampala and a luxury bus belonging to the Friendship Company. The bus was transporting more than 70 students and staff members from Mwebaza High School, who were embarking on an educational study trip to Jinja.
The high-impact collision caused the school bus to overturn violently onto its side, trapping dozens of terrified learners inside the mangled frame of the vehicle. Local residents and emergency services rushed to the scene to conduct a frantic rescue operation, navigating shattered glass and twisted metal to extricate the victims.
In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, state authorities moved swiftly to establish the exact sequence of events that led to the crash. Allan Ssempebwa, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Works and Transport, confirmed that the ministry’s Rail Safety Division has already deployed a specialized team to the scene to support ongoing inquiries by the police and the Uganda Railways Corporation. Ssempebwa noted that the team is tasked with establishing the precise operational circumstances surrounding the incident, promising that further details would be systematically provided as more forensic information becomes available.
Preliminary findings released by the Uganda Railways Corporation point directly toward a failure by the bus driver to comply with explicit traffic instructions and warnings. URC spokesperson John Lenon Sengendo revealed that a traffic police officer stationed approximately 200 meters from the railway crossing had clearly signaled the bus driver to halt to allow the oncoming train to pass. Despite the visual stop signal, the bus allegedly maintained its trajectory onto the live tracks.
Sengendo added that the train crew repeatedly and aggressively sounded the locomotive’s warning horn as it approached the level crossing, but the bus continued directly into the danger zone where it was struck mid-section.

The investigation is also probing potential internal and external distractions that may have compromised the driver’s situational awareness. Eyewitness Joseph Kaweesi, who was near the crossing at the time of the crash, noted that the students were singing loudly and high-volume music was blaring from the bus’s internal sound system as it approached the tracks.
This has raised critical questions among investigators as to whether the driver was physically capable of hearing the train’s approaching horn. However, other independent witnesses have firmly maintained that the train’s audio warnings were loud enough to be heard throughout the immediate vicinity despite the ambient noise.
While official accounts place significant blame on the driver’s actions, local residents and safety advocates have raised sharp grievances regarding the structural safety of the Kyetume railway crossing. Community members point out that the busy intersection lacks vital automated safety infrastructure, including electronic physical barriers, flashing warning lights, and functional traffic signals to prevent motorists from encroaching onto the tracks during train transits.
Furthermore, angry residents accused a local logistics firm, DAKS Clearing and Forwarding Company, of contributing to the hazard. They allege that the company routinely permits heavy commercial trucks to park haphazardly along the road reserves adjacent to the crossing, severely obstructing the sightlines of motorists approaching the railway line from the Mukono Municipality side.
The disaster also exposed severe gaps in the regional emergency medical response system. Abdul Ssali, a local first responder who assisted in pulling injured children from the overturned bus, revealed that the sheer volume of casualties instantly overwhelmed the localized ambulance services.
Due to the critical shortage of emergency medical vehicles, residents and good Samaritans were forced to transport several critically injured, bleeding students to medical centers on the backs of commercial motorcycle taxis, popularly known as boda bodas.
The majority of the injured learners were rushed to Mukono General Hospital, where emergency medical teams were mobilized to stabilize fractures, head trauma, and severe lacerations. Following the completion of initial on-scene emergency operations and the clearance of the tracks, the passenger train was permitted to resume its scheduled commute to Kampala.
In response to the tragedy, the Ministry of Works and Transport has issued an urgent appeal to all Ugandan road users to exercise maximum caution and situational alertness when approaching railway level crossings. Ministry spokesperson Allan Ssempebwa reminded motorists of their legal and safety obligations to strictly obey all standard traffic signs, slow down prior to crossings, and actively eliminate internal cabin distractions to successfully identify oncoming trains before attempting to cross live tracks.
From an institutional standpoint, John Lenon Sengendo stated that Uganda Railways Corporation is actively implementing a phased nationwide program dedicated to installing automated physical barriers at high-risk railway crossings located within densely populated urban centers.
However, Sengendo emphasized that structural infrastructure upgrades alone cannot eliminate accidents unless they are accompanied by responsible, defensive driving behavior among Ugandan motorists.
The ongoing joint investigation is expected to deliver a definitive report detailing the mechanical condition of the bus, the exact actions of the driver, and a formal assessment of whether the existing environmental conditions at the Kyetume crossing met minimum public safety standards.
