The Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court has adjourned the misprision of treason case against former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to July 7, 2026, as the embattled politician continues to battle severe health complications at Mulago National Referral Hospital.
Lukwago, who is also the President of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was scheduled to appear in court today for the mention of his case. However, proceedings were halted after his legal team provided updates on his worrying medical condition, making a physical court appearance impossible.
Lukwago remains admitted at Mulago Hospital under heavy security, where he was transferred last week following a direct order from Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera. His legal team, led by Medard Lubega Sseggona, has repeatedly raised alarms over his rapidly declining health, which they attribute to his recent time in military detention.
Medical assessments indicate that Lukwago is suffering from a dislocated spine, severe gastritis, hypertension, and respiratory complications. According to Sseggona, Lukwago requires specialized neurological interventions and an MRI-guided procedure that cannot be adequately handled within the Uganda Prisons Service healthcare system.

Doctors at Mulago are currently conducting a series of comprehensive tests to manage his pain, but his lawyers have indicated that plans are underway to medically evacuate him to India for specialized surgery if and when he is granted bail.
Lukwago is facing charges of misprision of treason. The prosecution alleges that he had prior knowledge of an alleged plot by his clients four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye and his aide Obeid Lutale to commit treason, but failed to report it to the relevant government authorities.
Before his brutal arrest on June 15, Lukwago was serving as the lead counsel for Besigye and Lutale in their ongoing treason trial at the High Court.
Despite presenting prominent sureties, including Gulu City Woman MP Betty Aol Ocan and Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze, the Makindye court previously denied Lukwago bail, citing the gravity of the charges and the potential for interference with ongoing investigations. The prosecution has maintained that the charges carry a potential life sentence upon conviction, emphasizing national security concerns.
The case will resume on July 7, when the court is expected to receive a formal, comprehensive medical report from the specialists attending to Lukwago at Mulago Hospital to determine the next legal steps.
