Four men have been formally charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Prison in connection with the brutal mob killing of Uganda Rugby Cranes star Sydney Gyabi Gongodyo.
The suspects appeared on Friday morning, June 12, 2026, before the City Hall Magistrate’s Court in Kampala, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that has ignited nationwide outrage and amplified calls for an end to vigilante justice.
The accused include Obed Mugwisa, 39, a boda boda rider from Nsimbiziwome Zone in Nakawa Division; Elly Mondoni, 33, a delivery agent attached to Medicinal Pharmacy and resident of Luzira; Joseph Owino, 30, a private security guard from Bukoto; and Henry Kabugo, 21, a boda boda rider from Old Kira Zone.
Appearing before Senior Grade One Magistrate Edgar Karakire, the charges were read to the four suspects through a court interpreter. According to the charge sheet, sanctioned under Kira Road Police Station CRB 619/2026, the quartet faces one count of murder contrary to Sections 171 and 172 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 128.
The prosecution alleges that on June 5, 2026, along Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala District, the accused, acting alongside others still at large and with malice aforethought, unlawfully caused the death of 27-year-old Gongodyo.
While the suspects indicated they understood the gravity of the accusations, Magistrate Karakire informed them that they could not enter a plea.
“This court does not have the jurisdiction to try your case because murder is a capital offense in nature. You will be remanded to prison as investigations continue, and you will be brought back for the mention of the case. Once investigations are complete, the matter will be forwarded to the High Court for trial,” Magistrate Karakire ruled.
State Prosecutor Grace Akite informed the court that police investigations are still highly active, with several key suspects still on the run. The four accused were subsequently remanded to Luzira Maximum Security Prison until June 23, 2026, when the case will return for mention.

The swift arrest of the four suspects was heavily accelerated by a massive, citizen-led online campaign. Following the June 5 attack, various video clips and photos of the lynching circulated widely across social media platforms, prompting internet users and sports activists to analyze the footage, isolate faces, and assist law enforcement in tracking down the perpetrators.
According to police sources, the prime suspect, Obed Mugwisa, was distinctly captured in the viral video footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and striking the rugby star with a large wooden plank.
Upon his arrest earlier this week, Mugwisa reportedly confessed during interrogation and led detectives to a local laundry (dobbi) where he had hidden the blood-stained yellow shirt, which has since been recovered as primary forensic evidence.
Similarly, 21-year-old Henry Kabugo was arrested in Wandegeya during a joint security operation after being identified in video footage wearing a blue reflector jacket and using a black hood to conceal his face during the assault.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that Gongodyo a towering forward for the national 15s rugby team (the Rugby Cranes) and a prominent player for the Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club was victimized by a tragic case of mistaken identity. He was reportedly cornered and violently attacked by an aggressive mob in the Bukoto-Naguru suburb after being falsely accused of snatching a woman’s handbag.
Although police patrol units eventually intervened and rushed the athlete to Mulago National Referral Hospital, he succumbed to his severe internal injuries shortly after arrival.
Gongodyo’s death sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sports fraternity, prompting the Uganda Rugby Union to temporarily postpone the high-profile Uganda Rugby Premiership semi-final matches out of respect.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala confirmed that while 11 suspects have been processed in custody so far, operations remain ongoing to track down every individual caught on camera participating in the fatal assault.
