The public health crisis has taken a highly alarming turn as the Ministry of Health officially confirmed two new cases of the deadly Ebola virus right in the heart of the capital city, Kampala.
The announcement, made on Monday, May 25, 2026, marks a dangerous escalation in the outbreak, confirming that the hemorrhagic fever has slipped past the western border containment zones.
According to preliminary briefings from health authorities, the two individuals had recently traveled from the high-risk border region near the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) shortly before the government’s strict travel halt was fully enforced. They began exhibiting severe symptoms over the weekend and sought medical attention, subsequently testing positive for the virus.
Both patients have been swiftly transferred to the highly secure isolation and treatment facility at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where they are receiving specialized intensive care.
The confirmation of the virus in a densely populated metropolis of over 3 million people has sent shockwaves through Kampala and significantly raised the stakes for the National Epidemic Response Task Force.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the country to five, following the three initial cases detected near the western border just two days ago.
In response to the capital’s exposure, the Ministry of Health, backed by the World Health Organization (WHO), has deployed heavily equipped rapid response teams across Kampala to conduct aggressive contact tracing.

Authorities are scrambling to track down transport operators, family members, and health workers who may have been exposed to the patients before they were isolated.
While President Yoweri Museveni recently urged the nation not to panic, the reality of Ebola in the capital is expected to prompt an immediate tightening of urban health protocols.
Citizens in Kampala and the surrounding metropolitan areas are being urgently reminded to strictly observe hygiene standards, suspend physical contact, and immediately report any symptoms to the toll-free national health emergency lines.
